Carey and I were in a first year French class together in 1966-67.  I recall how he would arrive in class smile and say  "Bonjour." Some of the girls would respond with their own "Bonjour."  I envied his extroversion and his apparent self-confidence. Later he was over self-confidence when in the spring of 1968 he ran for student body president and broke the rules bu not sticking to the speech script that he had submitted to the administration for the assembly. The administration disqualified him.

I ran into Jim M. at Christown Mall in late August 1968 and Jim told me that Carey had died in a motorcycle accident. I remember Jim said, "It's hard to believe. We thought Carey would conquer the world." I thought of Carey's outward self confidence, and I agreed.
