What a super job you committee guys are doing! It is also great fun to hear the classmate stories. So,I finally made time to add a few comments in celebration of the fifty years.I fondly remember our high school years and nearly all the names on the list classmates and teachers. Most of you will remember I had a beard during the summer 1968 and I chose not to reshoot the class photo. Once graduated I kept it in various forms until about 1973.

Richard Cohen and I both applied and were accepted to St Johns College Santa Fe NM campus. After the summer in Alaska and the fire lines, I went to Santa Fe. Not sure how long Richard stayed. I loved the curriculum, which is why I applied there. My inclination, however, resonated with Herman Hesse’s novel, "Magister Ludi." After a semester, I chose to %9

School Story

From time to time I have reflected on the "magic" of that time in Phoenix and how we all showed up there. By the time I was a senior, I spent most of my time out making money, working for charity groups and doing my independent studies. I remember telling coach/ history teacher Mr. Johnson that I was going to quit football to do such things. He said, “I am sorry to hear you are quiting, but I respect your decision.” He was less kind when, we faced the class chairs to the rear of the room, so when he came in, he was at the “back” of the class. He said, "I am going out and when I come back in, you all better be turned around.” The tone of voice reminded us he was a descendent of “Liver Eatin” Johnson, so in great haste we turned to face forward. I hope our teachers and coaches enjoyed us as much as I enjoyed them.

Surprise Everyone

In Ms. Gardner’s English class, I started an essay with a one-word sentence. It was very effective. Created interesting effects. I argued that it was a complete thought. I proposed that the parts of speech create a different, elaborated, albeit a restricted thought. It was really along the lines of Chomsky and Transformational Grammar. I always balanced what was expected with what I wanted to try, so I could stay in Ms. Gardner’s advanced English class. Such has been my path, to see the other side of the mountain, stretch the boundaries. Anyone interested there is a little bio on me at http://www.explorersclubdc.org/about-2/officers-and-board-members/bill-runyon/

Thanks to the awesome Phoenix Project committee for helping us realize that our beat goes on.
Each of you is a star in the desert sky – that includes you Mel Schultz.

Thanks to all who attended and contributed to the weekend and website successes.
It was good to see each of you again.

Thanks to those we missed that could not attend for whatever reason—you are yet part of what we are today
-- like the Milky Way we used to see in the Phoenix sky.

Yesterday laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown soldier with The Explorers Club President. A moving moment for all present in which to reflect on the service of so many, including some of our West classmates, fellow explorer/ heroes of the Challenger and Discovery, and the place of exploration in our nation’s history and future. Something I will always reflect on. It concluded three days gathering of some of the world's top explorers and awards.

Hi Brenda, I remember you through all of those times and classes from PT Coe to West. It is nice to know you have had a rewarding time since. I haven't heard a word of Charlie Robinson since graduation. As you probably remember he, Doug Klein and I were friends. Have you heard anything of Charlie?

Dan! Great to hear what you have been doing! I remember playing football with you and your speed on the track! Yes, Best of Times. And your RV trip must have been wonderful. We did a cross-country drive in our Cadillac a couple of years ago in October. A beautiful time and nation. I hope we see you this October. - Bill
